Why do we relapse? Why do we find ourselves making the same mistakes over and over again?

Most of us have experienced this in some way—whether it’s repeating toxic patterns in relationships, falling back into unhealthy habits, or making the same decision errors in our lives. But what if there’s a higher purpose or spiritual reasoning behind these cycles?

Relapse, in many ways, is a part of the human condition. From a psychological perspective, our brains are wired for patterns. When faced with familiar stimuli or situations, our brain often defaults to what it knows best. It’s kind of like a well-worn path in a forest. It’s easier to walk the path you know than to carve a new one.

Many spiritual teachings assert that life is about learning and growth. The idea is that our soul—or our essence, if you prefer—is on a journey. This journey involves lessons, challenges, and growth points. If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “life doesn’t give you what you want; it gives you what you need,” this aligns with that belief.

So, when we find ourselves repeating mistakes, maybe, just maybe, it’s because we haven’t truly learned or integrated the lesson that experience is trying to teach us. It’s as though the universe, or the spirits guiding us, are gently nudging us, saying: “Try again.”

But why? Why would the universe want us to experience pain, or make mistakes repeatedly?

Perhaps it’s not about punishment. Maybe it’s about mastery. Think about it: How many times did you fall when learning to walk? Did each fall not teach you a little bit more about balance, about resilience, about perseverance? The spirits, or the universe, might be giving us multiple opportunities to master these life lessons.

While there might be spiritual guidance or lessons we are meant to learn, we also have the power of choice.

So, if we find ourselves repeating mistakes, it might be a mix of a higher lesson waiting to be grasped, and our free will leading us back to familiar territory. The challenge, and perhaps the ultimate growth point, is recognizing this dance between destiny and choice, and consciously deciding to change our steps.

I invite you to reflect on any patterns in your life that seem repetitive. Ask yourself: What lesson might be hidden here? And how can I use my free will to choose a different path, to carve a new trail in the forest of my life?

Remember, the journey of the soul is ever-evolving, filled with challenges and lessons. Until next time, be kind to yourself and embrace the growth that comes from every experience.
